Editorial: Some solid police work leads to arrest
The ancient Roman philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca has been attributed as the source of the quote, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
Apparently, the Ocean View Police Department and Delaware State Police (DSP) were “lucky” earlier this week when they were able to combine their efforts to apprehend an alleged burglar.
In the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 1, DSP responded to a commercial burglary alarm at the Bethany Bay Homeowner’s Association Clubhouse, according to police. They reportedly found an exterior sliding glass door shattered, and it appeared to them that someone had entered the building, as a computer was found damaged.
Around that same time, Ocean View Police Department Sgt. Sidney Ballentine was conducting a traffic stop after he reportedly saw a car riding around in circles, and a subsequent check of the vehicle’s tag alerted Ballentine that the tag was fake. The officer said he noticed a hammer, crowbar and set of gloves in the backseat while he was talking with the driver, and heard from dispatch that there was a burglary at Bethany Bay. He reportedly detained the driver while troopers reviewed the video surveillance from the scene of the crime, and police were able to identify him as their suspect.
Lucky, in many ways. But not without good work by police and an opportunity created by being vigilant.
