South Bethany’s Community Enhancement Committee this week announced the winner in its 2nd Annual Beauty Contest for the Adopt-A-Canal/Road-End Program. The winner was the canal end located between Sussex and Tern, off Route 1, which was adopted by Bryon and Olivia Elrod. The Elrods received a $100 gift certificate from Lord’s Landscaping as their prize.
The Adopt-A-Canal/Road-End program has grown from six adopted gardens to 13 this year. From Aug. 17 to Sept. 2, South Bethany citizens were invited to visit each adopted canal/road end garden, select their top five favorites and cast their votes. This year, residents also had the opportunity to view photographs of each adopted canal end and vote online via the town’s Web site, at www.southbethany.org.
Second place in the 2012 contest went to Carol and Todd Stevenson, Sue and Robbie Callaway, and Dick and Maryanne Schmidt, for their canal end on Bayshore Drive, which is the first one on that street, on the right.
Third place went to Pat Voveris, for the Route 1 canal end between Petherton and Brandywine. Fourth place went to the Lynn and Jerry Masiello, Lois and Andrew Golian and a host of their neighbors, for the canal end on Canal Road between W. 4th and W. 5th streets. Fifth place went to Kathy Jankowski and Rob Youngs, and a host of their neighbors, for the canal end on Canal Road between W. 3rd and W. 4th streets.
To see photos of all 13 adopted canal/road end gardens and learn more about the volunteer efforts, read the September 2012 Adopt Program Update on the CEC section of southbethany.org.
The Adopt Program also has several new canal/road end adoptions pending for spring planting, committee Chairwoman and Councilwoman Sue Callaway noted. Those who are interested in more information about the Adopt Program can visit www.southbethany.org and click on the Community Enhancement Committee on the left column.
“We thank all residents who demonstrated their support for the program by voting in the contest – the Committee received nearly 100 votes!” said Callaway. “Thanks also to Adopt Committee members Sharon Nonn, Carol Stevenson and Bobbe Stephans, and Town Administrator Pam Smith and Town Clerk Dee Burbage for their help with the contest and the logistics involved.”
