Dagsboro police last week arrested a Frankford-area man after catching him having allegedly broken in to Heathman’s jewelry store on Main Street in Dagsboro.
Police said that, about 12:41 a.m. on Feb. 6, while on routine patrol, Officer David Ober observed movement within the Heathman’s. Ober said he then encountered Barry D. Matthews of Frankford within the store.
Matthews fled, police reported, and after a short foot pursuit and struggle, he was apprehended. Items removed from the business were found on Matthews, police said.
Matthews was arrested on charges of Burglary 2nd Degree, Possession of Burglary Tools and Theft, all felony charges. Additional misdemeanor charges included Criminal Mischief and Resisting Arrest. Matthews was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court No. 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institute for lack of $7,000 cash bond.
Dagsboro police officials noted that, within days of hiring an additional officer to increase police coverage, crimes were being detected and arrests made that might not have been possible previously.
