Barefoot Gardeners plant sale is for green thumbs and sandy feet

Kids, or kids at heart, can get a last-minute gift for Mom, or let her choose, at the Barefoot Gardeners Garden Club annual plant sale, on Saturday, May 10, in Fenwick Island.

“There are quite a few small ones that people can get for Mother’s Day gifts. The plants are grown locally,” said Karen Dudley, chairperson of the event.

Shoppers can choose from flowers, vegetables, vines, grasses and more. Additionally, they will be surrounded by people who love and know gardening.

“They can get advice on anything that they buy,” Dudley said.

That includes annuals, perennials and pre-planted decorative containers.

“[The grower] grows things in his own greenhouse in Salisbury [Md.], takes them around to local farmers’ markets and supplies to us,” said Dudley. “He only picks up things that he says are going to do well in this area.”

That means people can find good options for their home or their interests.

“I like any … plants that attract butterflies and hummingbirds,” Dudley said.

That’s perfect for the Barefoot Gardeners’ newest display: the butterfly table, loaded with plants and educational information to make a back yard friendly to the fluttering creatures.

“We really need to help the butterflies and bees and birds, because they help pollinate everything else,” Dudley said.

The plant sale funds many of the Barefoot Gardeners’ plantings and efforts in the community: at the Fenwick Island Light House, Justin’s Beach House respite house, beautification of Fenwick Island, Town Hall’s butterfly garden, the future Delaware Botanic Gardens at Pepper Creek and an annual scholarship.

“We do a lot with the money we get. Every penny we get goes back to the community,” Dudley emphasized. “We’re very active, and we try to keep learning and try to earn some money.”

The plant sale runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Coastal Highway and West James Street (near Pottery Place). For more information, call (443) 206-0567.

“Just come!” Dudley encouraged. “It’s a lot of fun everybody has a good time there.”
