Millsboro Chamber's annual golf classic to benefit Wounded Warrior Project

The Greater Millsboro Chamber of Commerce will be holding its 15th Annual Golf Classic at Baywood Greens on Aug. 27.

For the first time in the tournament’s history, it will be benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project, which provides programs and services to severely injured military service members during the time between active duty and their transition to civilian life.

“We felt, with such a large amount of veterans in our Chamber area, that it would be a fitting organization to donate to,” explained Amy Simmons, the Chamber’s executive director.

Along with the Wounded Warrior Project, the event will also help raise funds to support the Chamber’s longstanding scholarship fund.

“The Chamber gives a $1,000 scholarship to one senior that will be attending either a two- or four-year college program every year,” said Simmons.

Applications for the scholarship are available in February and close mid-April, so that the Chamber has enough time to determine a recipient before the senior awards ceremony.

“The student must live in either the 19966 ZIP code or 19939 ZIP code,” she added.

Simmons said the golf classic drew approximately 60 golfers last year and that she hopes more will attend this year.

The cost for a foursome is $500, but Simmons said that individuals may register without being in a group.

“We do have individuals, and we do pair them up with other people. Sometimes, we have two or just an individual, and we help put them in foursomes,” she said. “You don’t get much more of a beautiful venue to play at. With this event, you get your greens fee, your golf cart, breakfast, snacks and a buffet dinner with awards. It’s just a great day.”

Simmons said that golfers must register for the event by Aug. 23 and can find the registration information on the chamber’s Web site.

On the day of the event, registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by a putting contest at 9 a.m. At 10 a.m., play will begin, with a shotgun start.

Simmons said that the Chamber is still accepting sponsors for the event and that she hopes that golfers will take the opportunity to play on a beautiful course in good company.

“It’s a nice day for businesses to get to know some of the customers better,” she said. “It’s just a great day.”
