Local Jake’s set to hold qualifiers for regional burger-eating contest
Jake’s Wayback Burgers is gearing up for its 4th Annual Chowdown Showdown Burger Eatin’ Contest on Aug. 12 at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, Del.
“It’s a tradition they’re trying to build through the franchise, but at the same time they’re keeping it local to the original store,” said Michael Wolfe, the manager of the Millsboro location.
Before the ultimate showdown, contestants must pass a qualifying round in various locations in Delaware, Virginia, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York – one of which will be held at Jake’s Millsboro location.
“How the contest works is you have to eat five Jake’s with cheese, which is our two-patty burger. Each patty is 3.3 ounces, and you have to eat five of them,” explained Wolfe.
Registration for the qualifying round ends July 31. The registration fee is $20, and participants must be at least 18 to compete.
“Currently, we don’t have anyone signed up for it,” noted Wolfe. “So if only one person signs up, the only thing they’ll have to do is eat all five burgers. But if there’s more than one person, it’s whoever is the fastest.
“I hope somebody signs up… Whoever wins or completes the challenge in the qualifying round, they would go up to Frawley stadium in Wilmington and have another contest with all the winners from the other locations.”
The Showdown will take place on the baseball field, and participants will have a total of eight minutes to scarf down the five burgers. Whoever finishes first will take home a grand prize of $2,000, with second- and third-place winners receiving $1,000 and $500, respectively.
“It’s kind of like the hotdog eating contest – people want to eat fast,” he said.
Wofle said those who qualify for the Aug. 12 contest will “Definitely” have a good time.
“Plus, you get to go see a Blue Rocks game at the finals,” he added.
