All About U organizing trunk show for Kind Beauty Project
When starting a day of events, women are known to set aside a large chunk of time in their mornings, dedicated to getting ready. Hair, makeup and picking out an outfit to conquer the day can take an hour, or even two, as long as they have the right materials.
The problem is not everyone has the right materials.
Millville’s All About U salon and spa is taking part in an effort to change that. The salon has been collecting, and is continuing to collect, donations of new and gently used toiletries and tools to donate to People’s Place, which distributes the products to women’s domestic-abuse shelters, including the SAFE (Shelter Advocacy Freedom Empowerment) shelter, and La Esperanza, a Latino women’s domestic-abuse shelter.
In the last four months, six carloads full of hairbrushes, hairdryers, shampoo, soap, deodorant, styling products and many other hygiene products have been sent to the shelters to help women who had to abruptly leave their homes for the safety of both themselves and their children.
Many people have travel-sized, or even full bottles of products that they thought they needed and then never used. People can take a look to see what they have in a cabinet at home and what the can donate to the cause. So far, 70 cases of product and styling tools have been donated to help many women in need.
When trying to find a safe place to live, the last thing these women were thinking about was needing to grab their makeup bags, but now that they are safe, they want to still be able to make themselves beautiful, which can help them emit more confidence.
Lori Kelly, director of salon operations at All About U, said they have received many letters from the organization, thanking them for all they have done in efforts to help these women feel beautiful again. They have also received pictures of the women with smiles on their faces while they “go shopping” for the products. And those efforts won’t stop now.
On July 13, All About U salon and spa will be hosting a trunk sale from 4 to 8 p.m. at their salon. The event is two-fold. First, the trunk sale will be selling jewelry and clothing, along with many other fun items, that have been donated from various local vendors. The second mission of the event is to expand the Kind Beauty Project by collecting gently used spring and summer women’s clothing.
They are looking for dresses, skirts, shorts, tops, layering pieces and business-casual items for local women in need. (Though all donations are appreciated and could help someone, shoes and dry-clean-only items will not be collected at this time.)
People who donate at the trunk sale will get a discount that can be used toward treasures they find there. The trunk sale will also be selling T-shirts, sunglasses and tank tops that say “#KindBeautyProject.” T-shirts will be selling for $25, tank tops for $20, and sunglasses for $10.
Throughout the sale, a silent auction will be held, auctioning off various products donated by businesses in the community. The money raised through the event will be the startup money for All About U’s new charity, the Kind Beauty Project.
The hope is for the Kind Beauty Project to be an everyday term in the salon world, and they hope that the charity will allow for salons everywhere to easily participate regularly.
The salon is always looking for volunteers for the project. To volunteer, contact Lori Kelly at (302) 539-1925. Donations are being accepted during regular business hours, as well as at the trunk sale, which will be held at 35825 Atlantic Avenue in Millville.
