Millsboro Verizon store to give away school supplies

Sixth annual effort takes place Sunday

TCC, the largest authorized Verizon retailer in the U.S., is hosting its sixth annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway on Sunday, July 22, from 1 to 4 p.m. Local families are being encouraged to visit the Millsboro store, located at 28665 DuPont Boulevard (Route 113), to receive a backpack and school supplies.

The company hopes to give away between 300 to 500 backpacks in the area, said store manager Jim Unsworth III.

The TCC location in Millsboro is among approximately 1,500 stores participating in the campaign. The Verizon store is partnering with the Millsboro Police Department for the event.

“We just want to make it a fun day for local children,” said Unsworth. “We’re going to try to get more entertainment. We’re going to have snacks, Icees, water.”

The entertainment and refreshments will be free of charge to attendees, and no purchase is necessary to receive school supplies. There will not be any sales offered to parents of kids attending nor any flyers in the backpacks, Unsworth said. The day is about extending an arm to members in the community who may need it, he emphasized.

This year, the participating TCC stores expect to donate more than 180,000 school supply items nationwide. There is a limit of one backpack per child, and the child must be present to receive the backpack.

Last August, a Junior Achievement survey found that 60 percent of U.S. families said they struggle to afford school supplies. According to the 2017 Huntington Bank Backpack Index, released in cooperation with Communities in Schools, in its Midwest service area the average school supply list for the 2017-2018 school year cost $1,000 — equivalent to the average monthly mortgage payment in the country.

With the help of the Culture of Good, TCC has donated more than 700,000 backpacks and school supplies since 2013.
