Letter: Reader responds to previous letter

Editor:

In response to Bill Clemens: Sir, your letter a few weeks ago was an embarrassment and deceptive especially to those that believe everything they read and do absolutely no research on their own.

The gun control debate has been hijacked by progressive terminology more than any other political debate, save abortion. Anti-gun activists have relied heavily on fear-based language to persuade Americans that guns are inherently bad, and that the only solution to the problems we face is further gun control.

Assault is an action word. Rifles, or any firearm for that matter, do not assault anyone, they just lie there. They are an inanimate object. People assault people, with hands, feet, baseball bats, knives, cars, vans and, yes, guns. The violence in our society is a heart problem, not a gun problem.

AR-15 does not stand for assault rifle, AR stands for Armalite Rifle model 15. These firearms are “select fire” — this means it will only shoot one bullet per trigger pull. Automatic firearms have been illegal for citizens to own since the 1930s. Those that do purchase an automatic firearm go through a very rigorous and time-consuming background check and pay tens of thousands of dollars to own them — most are collectors, not average citizens.

You suggest that our government is adequate in protecting us. Here’s a list of “governments protecting their people.”

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Most recently Venezuela, since their gun ban, murder has skyrocketed because… only criminals have guns! The average citizen cannot protect themselves. Also, 163 pro-democracy protesters have been killed by — surprise! — by their government.

56 million defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th century because of gun control. You won’t see this data on the U.S. evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.

I support and pray for our law-enforcement officers but they cannot be everywhere at a moment’s notice. Average response time for a call during an attack or home invasion can be 10-40 minutes depending on your location and officer availability. You can cower in the corner while waiting for help but We the People will protect ourselves and those in our vicinity.
