James Leo “Jim” Overtoom, 88, passed away in his home in South Bethany, Del., on May 24, 2018. He was born on Sept. 20, 1929, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to the late Cyrilla H. Overtoom and the late Leo Joseph Overtoom.
Overtoom graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the Air Force Reserve. He was an assistant director for Baltimore County (Md.) Recreation & Parks until his retirement in 1992.
He had a passion for playing and watching sports of all kinds. He especially enjoyed golfing. He played football and basketball in college at the University of Maryland. He also loved reading and music and was a square-dance caller early in his career. Overtoom also played the ukulele and sang. He liked to travel, and he had been to Hawaii and China.
Overtoom was preceded in death by his brother, John L. Overtoom; his sisters, Irene Smith and Suzanne M. O’Donnell; and grandchild, Nickolas B. Pippen. He is survived by his sons, James G. Overtoom, Stephen G. Overtoom and Daniel G. Overtoom; daughters, Diane M. Pippen, Barbara A. Peterson and Elaine M Chapa; and grandchildren, Sara Pippen, Jillian Peterson, Kelsey Peterson, Kayla Chapa, Patrick Chapa, Rachel Overtoom, Jared Overtoom, Daniel G Overtoom Jr., Brooks A Overtoom, Brady Overtoom and Jamey Overtoom.
Friends are welcome to join the family to celebrate and honor his life on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on the beach at 83rd Street in Ocean City, Md. In case of inclement weather, the celebration of his life will be held at 219 Carlisle Drive in South Bethany, Del.
