Stephan L. Wode, 73, of Bethany Beach, Del., passed away on Nov. 12, 2017, at the Delaware Veterans Home in Milford, Del. He was born Dec. 28, 1943, in Washington, D.C., raised in East New Market, Md., by his grandmother Lena Hildenbrand, and graduated from North Dorchester High School in Hurlock, Md., in 1961.
Wode enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving for six years on nuclear submarines. Returning to civilian life, he worked as an engineer at several PEPCO power plants in the D.C. area. He retired to Bethany Beach, where he became active in the community, helping to start the popular farmers’ market and serving on the town council and the Bethany Beach Landowners Association. He was enthusiastic about his work as a registered lobbyist at the Delaware State Legislature.
He enjoyed being on the water, especially sailing and wind-surfing, and he loved his grandchildren, who called him “Grumpy.”
Wode is survived by his wife, Jean Knox Wode; sons, Wallace Acton, Christopher Acton, and Kurt Wode and his wife, Emily; grandchildren, Salter and Nora Wode; brother, Norman L. Wode; cousins, Carolyn Regan, John Hildenbrand, Fred Hildrenbrand and Mari Thompson; brother-in-law, John Knox Jr.; and many closer friends who he considered to be family.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018, at 11 a.m. at East New Market (Md.) Cemetery.
