Janet Lois (Meicke) Gelato, 72, formerly of Millsboro, Del., died of colon cancer on Aug. 30, 2018, at Seasons Hospice Unit in Newark, Del. She was born on Aug. 23, 1946, in Jersey City, N.J., to William and Dorothy Meicke.
Gelato graduated from William L. Dickinson High School in Jersey City, N.J., in 1964. She married her longtime sweetheart, Jim Gelato, on April 14, 1973, at Grace Lutheran Church in Jersey City. She became a professional secretary at Seacoast Realty and ResortQuest Real Estate.
After retiring from her professional career, Gelato lovingly devoted herself to the Foster Grandparents Program established by the State of Delaware, and guided, tutored and loved students at Lord Baltimore Elementary School in Ocean View and at Long Neck Elementary School.
As an active member of Community Lutheran Church in Omar, Del., and later at Grace of God Lutheran in Millsboro, Del., Gelato sang in the choirs and knitted hundreds of prayer shawls for cancer patients. She was a loving and caring person giving of herself to others. She loved her family very much.
Gelato was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Meicke, and her son, Jackie Gelato, in 1974. She is survived by her husband, Jim; her son, Tom, his wife, Jill, and their children, Jack and Kasey, of Swedesboro, N.J.; her daughter, Kathy, and her husband, Florian, of Berlin, Germany.
A celebration of life worship service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, at Community Lutheran Church, Frankford, Del., officiated by the Rev. Mark Molter, and the Rev. H.G. “Skip” McComas.
