The area’s ultimate youth soccer tournament will take place this weekend at River Soccer Club with the 18th Annual Columbus Day tournament.
A record 125 teams will descend upon the complex in Roxana, which is known for its top-quality fields and top-notch competition. As an added bonus, teams will get the opportunity to play on two fully-lit fields, with games under the lights.
“That is a brand new offering this year,” said River Soccer Club President Rebecca Mais. “The opportunity for the kids to have night games is really a thrill for them.”
Six different divisions, from U14 down to U9, in both boys and girls — with 24 different tiers throughout the divisions — will see more than 1,200 kids lacing up their boots to battle on the complex’s seven different pitches.
Teams will be coming in from Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland to partake in all the soccer action.
“This is quite the undertaking for our organization,” Mais continued. “We have hundreds of volunteers that this wouldn’t be possible without them. It’s a great event for the club, that teaches the kids about camaraderie and giving back.
“It’s the biggest fundraiser we have for the club, and the weather looks absolutely perfect for the weekend.”
The tournament will also feature the food trucks of Hocker’s as well as Kona Ice, and the River Soccer Club concession stand will also be open the entire weekend.
“We are happy to have Hocker’s and Kona back with us this year,” added Mais. “Hocker’s was surprised at how well they did last year, and it is a benefit to us as well, because they both give 20 percent of their proceeds back to the club from the weekend.”
