Randy K. Murray 68, of Millsboro, Del., passed away Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, at his home, with family by his side. He fought a brave battle against cancer.
Murray graduated from the University of Delaware in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree. He was an announcer for WHEN, the University of Delaware radio station. After graduation, he worked with his father, Aubrey Murray, at Collins & Ryan Propane Gas Company in Millsboro, until starting his own company, Redi-Call Communications. He owned Redi-Call in Georgetown, Del., for 40 years. His company still provides communications for hospitals, doctors, businesses and private individuals. Services include pagers, two-way radios, answering service, and remote control and data services.
Murray’s interests were many and varied. He was active in Boy Scouts, becoming an Eagle Scout. He was a pilot and enjoyed flying for business and pleasure. He was a captain in the Civil Air Patrol. As a teenager, he started a lifelong involvement with ham radio. Murray (W3LF) was a member of the local Ham Radio Club and the Radio Club of America.
When he was in high school, his parents sponsored a foreign exchange student, Alberto Triana from Bogota, Colombia. When Alberto returned to Colombia, Murray visited him. As good friends, they remained in contact throughout the years.
With his wife, Sharyn, Murray was a member of the Wicomico Hunt Club. He enjoyed riding his horse, as well as the many social activities of the club. Murray always had a keen interest in history. He was a member of the Archaeological Society of Delaware, participating in digs that involved long hours of digging and sifting dirt.
Genealogy was a great interest of his. He was able to trace his ancestors to the Murray clan in Scotland. Murray became a certified SCUBA diver, enjoying diving in the Florida Keys. He and his wife pursued the discipline of fencing.
Murray was preceded in death by his parents, Aubrey Murray and Helen (Magyari) Murray. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sharyn (Asquith) Murray; his cousins in Millsboro, Cheryl Layfield, her husband, Gary, and their children, Rodney and his wife, Kim, and family, Derrick and his wife, Sarah, and family, and Bradley Layfield; his cousin, Britt Murray and his wife, Bernice; a cousin, Missy Kenworthy, her husband, Randy, their daughter, Lacey Davis and her husband, Adam, and their family, of Florida; in Ohio, his uncle, John Magyari, and cousins Allen Magyari and his family, Jay Magyari and his family, and Reynette Magyari; cousins in Romania, Sandor Mozes and his son, Lorand; and Ernie, the standard poodle who stayed by his bedside.
A visitation will be held Friday, Oct. 5, 2018, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, Del., Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018, at 11 a.m. in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, State Street, Millsboro, Del., Entombment will follow at Millsboro Cemetery.
