William Augustus “Gussie” Davis, 84, passed away at home, in the care of his family and Compassionate Care Hospice, on Jan. 16, 2019. He was born Oct. 25, 1935, to the late Charles M. Davis and Minnie M. Street Davis in Millsboro, Del.
Davis was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1957 to 1959. He married Lillie Roma Wright on March 16, 1973, and together they raised their daughter, Sandra Y. Norwood. Over the years, he worked at Parker Block and Townsend Inc. and was also a car transporter for Millsboro Ford. He was meticulous in cleaning vehicles and tinkering on cars.
Davis was devoted to his cat and dog, Midnight and Zoe. He enjoyed church and served as an usher and trustee. He was known as a problem solver.
In addition to his parents, Davis was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lillie, in 2012, and his siblings, Lester, Layton, Clarence, Reginald and Carmenthus Davis. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Norwood; his granddaughter, Lakota Norwood; three siblings, Walter Davis, Annie George and Cherita Davis; sisters-in-law, Jean Davis of New Jersey, Janice Davis of Delaware and Calantha Davis of New Jersey; brothers-in-law, Charles Wright and his wife, Odette, Dallas Wright and his spouse, Chris, and Robert Wright and his wife, Anita; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
A funeral service and celebration of Davis’ life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, at the Harmony United Methodist Church on John J. Williams Highway, Millsboro, Del. The viewing and visitation start at 10 a.m., with the funeral service starting at noon. The Revs. Charlotte Nichols, Karen Mumford and Claudia Waters will conduct the service. Interment will follow in Harmony UMC Cemetery, with the conferring of military honors. Floral tributes are welcome. Condolences may be sent online at www.watsonfh.com.
