For the past decade or so, during the first week in February, the Frankford Volunteer Fire Company has been even busier than usual. The reason: It’s time to prep for the fire company’s annual Bull & Oyster Roast.
The event, scheduled this year on Saturday, Feb. 2, is one of the fire company’s most important and well-attended fundraisers. Last year, according to event chairperson and Deputy Fire Chief Tommy Bacon, the funds raised were used to help the company purchase a new ambulance.
The fire company strives to raise about $25,000 each year through fundraisers, to offset costs of needed items that are not met by State funding and other income sources, Bacon said. Last year, the funds for the bull and oyster roast also went toward a power stretcher for the new ambulance, which helps prevent back injuries in emergency medical technicians because, Bacon said, “It does the lifting for them.”
This year, the fire company hopes to be able to purchase a Lucas CPR device, which “does the compressions for you” — particularly important in rescue situations where there is a lot going on, Bacon said.
The Bull & Oyster Roast, he said, involves just about every member of the fire company, from those who steam the oysters to those who help with set-up and clean-up duties.
“Community support” is what’s important for the Bull & Oyster Roast to be a success, Bacon said. “It takes a lot of people to make it happen,” he said. “A lot goes into it.”
He acknowledged that the fire company is “pretty famous” for its oyster fritters, which he said are a perennial favorite at the roast.
“It’s a good ol’ night of community fellowship,” Bacon said. “We try to have it when there’s not much else going on, give people a chance to get out of the house for a little while.”
“Basically, it’s all-you-can-eat raw and steamed” oysters, he said, as well as fried oyster sandwiches, roast beef sandwiches, hot sausages, hot dogs and coleslaw. A beer trailer will be on site for those 21 or older; and sodas and water will also be available. A DJ will provide entertainment for the evening, and many items will be raffled off throughout the event.
Tickets for the Bull & Oyster Roast cost $35 in advance or $40 at the door. Tickets are available from any fire company member, at Frankford Town Hall or through the fire company’s Facebook page.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.; food will be served starting at 6 p.m. The event will end at 10 p.m.
