Maj. Rev. Jack Randolph Mercy, 84, of Millsboro, Del., died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019, at Delaware Veterans Home in Milford, Del. He was born in Tulsa, Okla., son of the late Jack Mercy and Gladys (Hughes) Mercy.
Mercy served in the U.S. Air Force for more than 20 years, retiring as a major. He was a helicopter rescue pilot and was a Vietnam War veteran, surviving 13 strokes from Agent Orange. Upon retirement, he helped start Kent Christian Academy and Kent Christian College in Dover, Del.
He then, with the help of his lovely wife, pastored the Apostolics of Georgetown, Del., for 14 years and established the Good Shepherd Inn Bed & Breakfast. Upon retiring from pastoring, Mercy substitute-taught for five years in Maryland. He always shared his best friend, Jesus, with whomever he encountered.
Mercy was preceded in death by a daughter, Grace Kathleen Mercy Payne. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen F. Mercy of Millsboro; a daughter, Marie Rose Mercy of Millsboro; two grandchildren, Kelly Baker and Christina Wenek; and five great-grandchildren, Victoria, Zachery, Sam, Vivian and Ryan.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, at 2 p.m. with visitation at 1 p.m., at Lighthouse Christian Center in Milford, Del. All who cannot attend in person can watch on Facebook live at “Maria Rose Mercy.” Burial will be held at a later date, in Arlington National Cemetery.
