All high-schoolers in Indian River School District are being invited to a College & Career Fair on Feb. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Sussex Central High School.
Parents and students can speak with representatives from various colleges and universities, training programs and local businesses. They’ll learn about options for college, career or summer job.
“We just really want to equip families to be aware of the various opportunities that are available to students after high school, ultimately leading to a successful career. And that looks different to everybody,” said Counselor Tonya Jones. “We just want them to have all the information to them to navigate it.”
Even if teens are feeling a bit clueless, they can start brainstorming and “begin to identify what they are interested in, or what they are not interested in.” Knowing what fields to avoid is just as important for decision-making, James said.
Underclassmen should start thinking about college before senior year starts, to prepare for those action steps, she said.
“These conversations about career and college … really need to start at a sooner age,” Jones said. “We’re trying to communicate to parents and students that the earlier your family starts researching options, the better students will be prepared to pursue their plans after high school.”
That can help reduce some senior-year stress.
“So far, we’ve got about 15 to 17 colleges … within a three-hour drive,” James said of representation at the event. “We’ve also started to receive notifications from companies looking to hire high school students.”
There are also some enrichment groups, including TeenSHARP, a college access program.
Guests can arrive anytime for the open house, hosted in the SCHS auxiliary gym.
