Peggy Joyce Maxwell, 80, of Dagsboro, Del., and formerly of Lanham, Md., died peacefully, with her family at her side, on Sunday, March 10, 2019. She was born in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 16, 1939, the eldest of four children, to Gladys Lee Mangum and James Albert Mangum.
Maxwell grew up in Bladensburg, Md., and graduated from Bladensburg High School in 1956. She was a skilled secretary and started her first job at Litton Industries in College Park just days after graduation. In her later career, she worked as secretary of District Council 51 of the International Union of Painters & Allied Trades (IUPAT), from which she retired. She was a member of IUPAT Local Union 1937, serving as recording secretary for many years.
For 42 years, Maxwell and her husband, Mike, had been summertime residents of Cedar Shores in Ocean View, Del. They loved the area so much that, upon retirement, they relocated to Dagsboro, where they had lived for 14 years, enjoying their beach living year-round.
Maxwell was preceded in death by her parents, Gladys and Albert Mangum; her sister, Jean Carol Owens; and her grandson Michael David Maxwell Jr. She is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Michael Drake Maxwell; her sister, Patricia Ann Mangum; her brother, James Albert Mangum Jr. and his wife, Ruth; her children, Kathy Lynn Ziese and her husband, William, Michael David Maxwell Sr. and his wife, Teresa, and Sherry Lee Maxwell (and Karl Billings); four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her nieces and nephews, numerous relatives and friends.
A funeral service was to be held on March 15, 2019, at Gasch’s Funeral Home in Hyattsville, Md., with interment at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Md. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorial contributions to the Michael D. Maxwell Jr. Foundation for Mental Awareness, Inc.; 4C Gardenway; Greenbelt, MD 20770-3703.
