Pauline ‘Polly’ McCabe Higgins, 93

Pauline “Polly” McCabe Higgins, 93, died peacefully on March 28, 2019, with family by her side, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, Del. She was born Dec. 18, 1926, in Millville, Del., to Amos and Margurite McCabe. She was the eldest of her beloved sisters, Ruth, Fran and Hilda.

After graduating from Lord Baltimore School in Ocean View, Del., Higgins attended the University of Delaware and earned a degree in elementary education. She moved to Seaford, Del., and for several years was a first-grade teacher at Seaford Central School.

In 1949, she married Richard C. “Dick” Higgins of Seaford. A few years later, they moved to Newark, Del., where they raised two sons. After Dick Higgins retired from the DuPont Co., some of Higgins’ happiest times were the ones she spent with him, working on their rustic cabin in the Colorado mountains, where they lived for several months each summer. Eventually, they returned to Seaford and lived in the Higgins family home on Cannon Street.

After her husband’s death, Higgins moved to Crossgate Village and was active in the homeowners’ association. She enjoyed traveling and playing bridge with family and friends. Higgins spent an equal amount of time at her Bethany Beach cottage, where she had many happy summers with her grandchildren and enjoyed visiting with several generations of relatives and friends from near and far.

Most recently, Higgins was a resident of Seaford Manor House and was grateful for the kind care she received there. She was an enthusiastic member of the poetry club, and enjoyed dining and talking with her many new friends.

Higgins was preceded in death by her husband and by her eldest son, Stephen McCabe Higgins. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph E. Higgins and Karen K. Higgins of Seaford; her grandchildren, Sarah, Alice and her husband, Andrew, Gove and Stuart; and her nieces, nephews and their families.

She will be remembered for her graciousness, gentle kind spirit and love for life, which touched many lives.

A graveside service will be held at noon on Saturday, April 13, 2019, at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Stein Highway and Market Streets, Seaford, Del. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorial donations to Delaware Hospice; 100 Patriots Way; Milford, DE 19963. Condolences may be sent online at www.watsonyatesfuneralhome.com.
