In response to the recent letters by Mr. Moeller and Mr. Rine on this subject [littering], all the ideas are excellent.
Practical approaches need to be taken, such as meeting with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control (DNREC) about the status of existing ordinances and enforcement, and the need for additional ones.
Two April roadside cleanup events in this area follow:
• Mon, April 22, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Route 54 section cleanup
Sponsored by: Environmental Committee of the 38th Democratic Representative District
Meeting place: Corner of Route 54 and Old Mill Bridge Road (BP station)
Meet in the back parking lot of the BP station.
The Environmental Committee will supply safety vests, plastic gloves and trash bags. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and long pants. Bring a grabber if you have one. Each person must sign a DNREC release. Children 12-17 may also participate under parental supervision and with a signed DNREC release. Come have fun and spruce up our environment! In case of rain, the road cleanup will be rescheduled for Saturday, May 11.
• Tues, April 30, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Beaver Dam Road section cleanup
Sponsored by: The Shore Dems
Meeting Place: Melson’s Funeral Home, 38040 Muddy Neck Road, Ocean View
Meet in the parking lot. Please bring your own gloves and other trash pickup aids. Wear long pants, long sleeves and sturdy shoes. We will provide safety vests and plastic bags. We do not encourage participation by children under 12 years old.
