The Indian River School District announced this week that it is now accepting nominations for its ExCEL program.
ExCEL is a district-wide gifted program for the Indian River School District’s academically-talented children. The program takes place within the regular school day with an ExCEL teacher providing services for the student. Participating students engage in small group instruction, which emphasizes higher-level thinking skills.
In order to show their understanding of the content, students will also complete at least one take-home project per year. That project will require the child to complete various tasks at home, beyond the work and tasks assigned by his or her classroom teacher.
Children who are currently in Grades 3 or 4 and whose parent feels he or she is in the Top 2 to 5 percent of his or her grade level and can work independently, may be nominated by their parent for the ExCEL program. Nomination forms may be obtained from the child’s homeroom teacher. Forms must be returned to the child’s homeroom teacher no later than May 10 in order for the ExCEL teacher to complete the screening process before the end of this school year.
