The recent surge in letters regarding the litter problem here in Sussex county make it clear that this is an issue of concern for our residents. While the Sussex county government may not be legally required to offer clean up services, the fact is our taxpayer dollars are used to help fund this service.
In this respect, they are providing the cleanup service to the benefit of a very wide population of their constituents (unlike some other services funded by taxpayers). Additionally, more focus should be placed on litter prevention. In this regard, we fall short at all levels of government.
We can (and should) do more about litter prevention and deterring such behavior. Success on this front would mean less clean up after the fact. That would be a win for all of us.
