Helen H. Murray, 97, of Selbyville, Del., passed away at Berlin (Md.) Nursing Center Thursday, May 30, 2019. She was born Dec. 9, 1921, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Mordecai Hudson and Helen (Edwards) Hudson.
Murray worked for the Delaware State Veterinarian’s office prior to her marriage to Winford E. “Winnie” Murray Sr. on June 24, 1948. After her marriage, Helen became a full-time homemaker. In 1969, she took a cafeteria monitor position at Philip C. Showell Elementary School, where she was known to pull neck-hair or twist an ear to keep her youthful charges in line.
One of her favorite pastimes was spending time at the beach with her husband and close friends, fishing and socializing, and especially annual autumn trips to the Outer Banks, N.C. Murray also enjoyed reading and always had a couple of books around. Unfortunately, she was robbed of that pleasure by the loss of her vision.
Murray was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Winford E. “Winnie” Murray Sr.; her sister Betty Lynch, and her brothers Fredrick Hudson and Mordecai Hudson Jr. She is survived by her son, W. Edward Murray Jr. and his wife, Sherry; two grandsons, Kyle H. Murray and his wife, Melanie, and Logan R. Murray; and two sisters, Jaqueline Tingle, and Shirley Fisher and her husband, George.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Roxana Cemetery in Frankford, Del. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorial contributions the Frankford Public Library; P.O. Box 610; Frankford, DE 19945. Condolences may be sent online at www.melsonfuneralservices.com.
