The GFWC Selbyville Community Club received several state awards for community service programs at the 122nd Annual Convention of the Delaware State Federation of Women’s Clubs, held in Rehoboth Beach from May 15 to May 17.
The Selbyville affiliated women’s club was awarded first place in the category of Art, cited for the Youth Art Month juried contest and display, which is held annually during March. The competition culminates with a month-long display of youth artwork at the Selbyville Public Library.
A second first-place award was given in the category of Public Issues, for the Coats & Sweats for Vets collection and distribution sponsored by the Selbyville Community Club each December. During December 2018, more than 650 coats were collected, packed and transported to the Delaware Center for Homeless Veterans, for distribution throughout the state.
The club also received a second-place award for its activities in the area of Education and an honorable mention for Legislation & Public Policy activism.
Several members of the club also won individual awards in the Writing & Photography contests. Debby Hiob and Celeste McTighe had prize-winning photos. Rita Hollada won first place in the Short Story category and Susan Steele won second place and Rita Hollada won third place in the Poetry competition.
First-place award-winners continue forward for national competition. Winners will be announced at the convention of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in Austin, Texas, from June 27 to July 2.
The non-profit Selbyville Community Club was founded in 1916 and is affiliated with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. The Selbyville club is open to all women in the area who have a desire to be involved in projects that benefit the local community, the state and beyond. Meetings are generally held at the Selbyville library on the second Thursday of each month beginning at 1 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
