Larry A. Hayes, 71

Larry A. Hayes, 71, of Georgetown, Del., passed away at his home on July 18, 2019. He was born in Milford, Del., on Nov. 17, 1947, to the late Arthur Hayes and Ethel Givens Hayes.

Hayes was active in Boy Scouts and served in several leadership positions with Troop 102, ultimately earning the highest honor in scouting, Eagle Scout. After graduating from Milford High School, he served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of service in Vietnam. Hayes served with the 1-82 Artillery Division in Vietnam, where he was wounded during heavy artillery fighting. After the army, he attended college, earned an architectural engineering degree and became a surveyor for the State of Delaware. He served more than 30 years in that capacity.

Hayes was a multi-talented “fix-it” and carpenter who loved working with wood, building things and working with his hands. He enjoyed gardening and coin-collecting. Hayes lived a very full life, a hard life, and would share his experiences with anyone who engaged him in conversation. He was a skilled mathematician who enjoyed helping his children with their math homework.

Hayes was preceded in death by his brother Bill Hayes. He is survived by his four children, Katherine Blazo of North Brunswick, N.J., Megan Hayes of Newark, Del., Maureen Stevens of Georgetown, Del., and Ian Hayes of Cinnaminson, N.J.; four grandchildren, Leila Blazo, and Kaden, Brycen and Briannah Stevens; and his brother, Garry Hayes, of Georgetown, Del.
