Della Mae Drew, 83

Della Mae Drew, 83, departed this earthly life very peacefully at 3:34 p.m. on Friday, July 19, 2019, with her brother by her side at Cadia Healthcare Renaissance Nursing Home in Millsboro, Del. She was born in Clarksville, Del., on Nov. 11, 1935, to the late William H. Hall and Josephine L. Harris Deloach.

As a child, Drew attended at Blackwater School in Clarksville and later attended Frankford 206. Known to her family and friends as “Aunt Dell,” she always held a job: a domestic worker at various local motels/hotels; line worker and eventual manager for Bunting Nursery in Selbyville; assisting her late husband Albert “Cub” Drew with his trash-collection business; helping her niece clean summer rentals at the beach; and babysitter for her last “child,” Devin, before officially retiring.

At an early age, she joined Union Wesley United Methodist Church in Clarksville. While at home, she was very supportive of the church. At one time, she had a key and would open up the church, turn on the heat and lights to prepare the building for Sunday morning worship or anything else that was needed. She also kept an eye on the church and grounds to see what was happening and who was coming and going, especially during camp meeting time. Drew enjoyed sitting on the porch, listening to what was going on back on the campground and everything else around Dogpatch. Her porch was the ideal spot to see all who entered and exited the town.

Everyone who knew Drew knew that she was very outspoken. Her personality was larger than life; if a thought came in her mind, it came out of her mouth with absolutely no filter. No one had to guess what she thought about anyone or anything because she sure would say so. She will be sorely missed for shooting her shotgun on New Year’s Eve, cussing out anyone who played an April Fool’s joke on her, cooking all sorts of good food, including muskrat and chitterlings, putting anyone in his/her place when she thought it was needed, and showing that she could dance better than anybody else in the world.

Cherishing her memories her brother and sister-in-law, James “Joe Benny” Deloach and Vanessa Deloach of Millsboro; her nieces and nephews, known to her as her children, Rosalind L. Lockwood-Brooks and Sidney of Abingdon, Md., Franchita Eborn and Early of Ft. Washington, Md., Marcea Redden of Fruitland, Md., Michael and Jakeysia Snead of Millsboro, Jaireece Hobbs of Berlin, Md., Jeremy Jones of Bridgeville, Del., and Devin Deloach of Millsboro; a god-daughter, Cheryl Harris-Holland of Millsboro; godson, Bernard Flammer of New York; sister-in-law, Loretta Chowdury of Dover, Del.; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and Vitas Hospice and the wonderful staff of Cadia Healthcare Renaissance Nursing Home, who took such wonderful care Drew and treated her as if she was their personal family member.

A funeral service and celebration of her life were to be held July 27, 2019, at Union Wesley United Methodist Church in Clarksville, Del., with interment in the adjoining cemetery. Condolences may be sent online at
