It’s been discussed in previous years, but never came to fruition — until now.
The Lower Sussex Little League will be offering fall baseball for the 2019 season, and registration is currently open for those interested. Parents with kids ages 8-12 as of Little League age in 2020 can visit the organization’s website at www.lowersussexlittleleague.com, but registration ends on Saturday, Aug. 17.
There will also be an in-person registration at the Little League complex, above the concession stand, on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 9 to 11 a.m.
“We’d like to make this like a start of something that, hopefully, gets larger,” said Jim Gates, who is organizing the fall ball program. “We threw this out at the last minute because we got some interest from parents. We got the blessing from the board, and we said why not run with it?
“Right now, we are strictly focused on the Major/Minor divisions, but next year we’d sort of like to replicate what we have in the spring. We have a lot of guys that are interested in coaching, which is great.”
The registration cost is $40, and every player will receive a jersey and hat. Tryouts for the fall season will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17. Major/Minor level kids will try out from 9 to 10:30 a.m. with the Major-only level from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
“It’s not gonna be entirely clinical or instructional,” continued Gates. “We are really looking to play competitive baseball. I am hoping to partner up with some of the other local organizations to see if we can play them. It’ll make things more fun and create more game opportunities for the kids. We have the full support from everybody, and we seem to have a good deal of interest.”
Practices will start the week of Aug. 19, with games starting after Labor Day. Games will be played during the week, under the lights. For more information or to express interest in coaching a team, contact Jim Gates at email@example.com.
