Teruko Achtermann, 92, known to many as “Mum Mum” or “Teddy,” of Lewes, Del., passed away peacefully, at home, on Aug. 9, 2019. She was born on Oct. 23, 1926, in Osaka, Japan, where she met and married her husband, John, who was stationed there during World War II, before moving to the United States and becoming a citizen.
Achtermann worked at Dressco in Lewes and then for Ken Stacy in Georgetown, Del. Because of her love for sewing, she helped many brides-to-be have their most beautiful day by altering their wedding dresses. She worked at Candlelight Bridal Shop in Millsboro, Del., for more than 20 years. She also enjoyed crocheting and playing poker, but her passion was going to the casino. Her favorite show was “The Walking Dead” (needless to say, she loved horror movies).
Achtermann was preceded in death by her husband, John Achtermann, and daughter Joan Radish. She is survived by two sons, John Achtermann of Angola, Del., Joseph Achtermann of Oak Orchard, Del.; two daughters, Lola Achtermann of Lewes, and Mary Saulsbury and her husband, Joby, of Mardela Springs, Md.; 11 grandchildren, Johnny, Teruko, Louie, Stephanie, Jerry, Allan, Matt, Erin, Steven, Nicole and Christina; and 19 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was to be held Aug. 18, 2019, at Watson Funeral Home in Millsboro, Del., officiated by the Rev. Evans Clark. Interment was to follow at St. John’s United Methodist Church Cemetery in Georgetown, Del. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorial donations to VITAS Hospice; 30265 Commerce Dr., Ste. 202; Millsboro, DE 19966. Condolences may be sent online at www.watsonfh.com.
