Sherman Glenn Banks, 81
Sherman Glenn Banks, 81, of Gumboro, Del., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019. He was born Jan. 3, 1938, to the late Lloyd and Clara Banks, at home in Selbyville, Del.
He retired in 1992 from the Nylon Capital DuPont plant in Seaford, Del., where he worked as maintenance planner supervisor. He and his wife owned and operated S&T Package Store in Gumboro for a few years.
Banks served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1960, stationed in Germany and receiving a Good Conduct Medal. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge AF&AM 37 in Dagsboro, Del., East Sussex Moose Lodge 2542, Bi State Ruritan Club, Selbyville Elks Lodge 2173, Dagsboro Volunteer Fire Company and Delaware Mobile Surf Fisherman.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, watching NASCAR and watching his great-grandsons’ sports games. His family was his biggest joy, and he was so proud of them all. His favorite words of advice were, “If you want to do something, don’t wait. Just do it,” and “Take care of your health.”
In addition to his parents, Banks was preceded in death by a grandson, Thomas G. Kirshner Jr., and his in-laws, James and Jerdie Hitchens. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Thelma J. Banks; two brothers, Albert Banks and his wife, Carol, and David Banks and his wife, Bonnie; his two children, Kim Kirshner and her husband, Tom, and Glenn Banks and his wife, Missy; three grandchildren, Ashley West and her husband, Justin, Ashley Tyre and her husband, Steven, and Adam; three great-grandchildren, Ryland West, Waylon Tyre and Weston Tyre; and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends.
A funeral service was to be held Aug. 17, 2019, at Watson Funeral Home in Millsboro, Del., and officiated by the Rev. Chuck Reynolds. Burial was to follow at Carey’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorial donations to the Gumboro Community Center; 36849 Millsboro Hwy.; Millsboro, DE 19966, where he was a long-term member and past vice-president.
