Dog rescue group, veterans to benefit from Sept. 7 event
Grass Roots Rescue Society members organizing the third annual 4 Paws Got Your 6 benefit on Sept. 7 are hoping to raise about $5,000 to help fund the Grass Roots Rescue Society for dogs and Canines Assisting Service Heroes (CASH).
The event name references that a service dog, which has four paws, has the veteran’s “6,” or protects his back, and will always be there for him.
The saying “got your 6” is said to have originated during World War II and refers to the hour of 6 o’clock, because if one were standing in the center of a clock, facing the 12, the number 6 would be behind them.
Focused on veterans — especially those with post-traumatic stress disorder or brain injuries — whose lives are impacted by service dogs, the event will be from 1 to 6 p.m. at the SAL Post 28 Oak Orchard/Riverdale American Legion at 31768 Legion Road in Millsboro.
There will be no admission charge, although those attending are being asked to buy raffle tickets or make a contribution.
Grass Roots Rescue Society started in 2013 and is an all-volunteer, nonprofit group that has placed dogs in foster care in Delaware and Maryland. See www.grrde.org for more information.
Vendors will sell arts and crafts, and there will be four bands playing, food trucks Truck It and Crenshaw Cooks, and grilled hotdogs and hamburgers for sale. The bands are Mike Garvilla from 1 to 2 p.m., Judy Sings the Blues from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m., Hope For Success from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and Deviation by Design from 4:45 to 6 p.m.
In the first year of the event, about 600 people attended, although the crowd was smaller last year because of rain and wind. The hope is for at least 400 to be in attendance this year and to raise $5,000. Half the proceeds will go to the rescue and the other half to CASH. The dogs are trained by Riedel K9 in Dover.
Dogs available for adoption through Grass Roots will also be at the event.

In case of rain, 4 Paws Got Your 6 will be held on Sept. 8.
