IR home games set to broadcast on NFHS

Back to college? Moved away from the area? Still want to watch your Indian River High School sports?

Well, that is now possible, thanks to the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) and their online streaming service. The subscription-based website, at nfhsnetwork.org, provides the opportunity for current and former students, parents, grandparents, fans, etc., to watch their favorite high school programs online or on their mobile devices.

Indian River has created this opportunity after purchasing the necessary equipment for the football stadium, as well as the indoor gymnasium. Only events that are featured in those two spots will be available for streaming at this time.

“It provides an opportunity for our student-athletes’ family and friends, as well as our fans, to watch them in their respective sports,” IR Athletic Director Todd Fuhrmann said. “It has been quite the undertaking to get it all together with the camera, the wiring and the linking to a network for streaming.”

The broadcasts will allow for the IR Athletic Department to have sponsors for each of the events, and those interested in sponsoring them can contact Fuhrmann directly for more information, at todd.fuhrmann@irsd.k12.de.us.

The camera being used — which is completely weather-proof — has an auto-tracking feature that enables it to follow the action with panning and zooming. There is no actual camera operator required. The score graphics sync up with the stadium or gymnasium’s scoreboard.

All games will be streamed to the Indian River-branded school page on NFHSnetwork.com, so it will be easy for those looking to find the action.

Home varsity football and boys’ soccer (both varsity and JV) in the football stadium, as well as girls’ volleyball (both varsity and JV) in the school’s gymnasium will be available for streaming.

The subscription is available in two ways. Fans can do the full year at $5.83 per month, which is a 42 percent savings, billed once at $69.99, or they can sign up for monthly service at $9.99 per month. All subscriptions include full access to live regular-season and post-season sporting events. They also feature features immediate access to events when they are available on-demand. A portion of the subscription fee goes back to the IR athletic department.

Subscribers are not limited to just Indian River. Fans who know other student-athletes playing at another participating school will be able to stream their games as well.

As of press time on Sept. 4, there were still some final tweaks being made with a couple additional equipment purchases that will allow Fuhrmann to include play-by-play and color commentators in the broadcasts.
