Mary K. Hughes, 88, of Dagsboro, Del., formerly of Hyattsville, Md., passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019, at the Country Rest Home in Greenwood, Del. She was born in Washington, D.C., on Feb.14, 1931, daughter of the late George Franklin Hughes and Esther Madeline (Richard) Hughes.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Maryland and her RN from the Georgetown School of Nursing. Hughes worked for more than 40 years as a registered nurse for Louis J. Goffredi and Fred R. Sanderson, two surgeons in the D.C. area, before her retirement.
She was deeply devoted to the Catholic Church where she attended daily Mass and faithfully prayed the rosary. Hughes also loved the theater and the arts, as she volunteered countless hours at the Arena Stage in Washington as an usher. In 2001, Hughes retired to the beach, where she became involved in her community as a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, the Lord Baltimore Lioness Club, South Coastal AARP and the Red Hat Society.
She will be best remembered for her generosity to her extended family.
In addition to her parents, Hughes was preceded in death by a sister, Madeline Harvey and her husband, George; two brothers, George Hughes and his wife, Maydie, and James Hughes; and a brother-in-law, Jerome Timmons. She is survived by a brother, John Hughes and his wife, Helen, of Bala Cynwyd, Pa.; a sister, Margaret A. Timmons of Silver Spring, Md.; a sister-in-law, Ann Hughes of Vienna, Va.; and several loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was to be held Sept. 3, 2019, at St. Ann Catholic Church, Bethany Beach, Del., with a graveside service on Sept. 4, 2019, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Md.
