The Delaware Department of Transportation this week announced that Hudson Road in Roxana will be closed between Gum Road and Deer Run Road beginning at 7 a.m. on Sept. 9 and running until 3 p.m. on Sept. 18, pending weather.
The closure is for removal and replacement of a crossroad pipe for drainage improvements.
Detour signage will be posted for motorists.
Crossroad pipes carry water from one side of the road to the other. The corrugated metal pipe may corrode through and develop holes in the pipe, officials noted, and once holes start to form, the fill dirt on the outside of the pipe that supports the road can be lost into the pipe. That can create a sink hole in the road and can cause the pipe to collapse. Once the pipe starts to collapse, the structure can no longer safely carry vehicular traffic and transport water flow through the pipe, they said. The crossroad pipe is replaced with either concrete and/or plastic.
