Shirley Palmatary Cobb, 87

Shirley Palmatary Cobb, 87, of Dagsboro, passed away on Sept. 24, 2019, at Harrison House in Georgetown, Del. She was born in Chester, Pa., on Sept. 2, 1932.

Her family moved to Millville, Del., in 1945, and her parents took over Doc Hocker’s store and called it Palmatary’s Town Cut Rate, where they sold patent medicines, sandwiches and ice cream.

She graduated from Lord Baltimore High School in 1950 and married William Cobb in 1954. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Aug. 7.

Early in their marriage, Cobb worked in the office at Peninsula Nursery in Selbyville, Del. Then, for 20 years, she worked part-time at her parents’ store, Harold’s Tots & Teens in Seaford, Del., while she was raising her family. After the store closed in 1978, she worked at Treasure Island Fashions.

Cobb loved Christmas and the holidays. Although she was a quiet person, she was very creative and could make almost anything. She baked wonderful cakes for everyone’s birthday or anniversary. She was known for her potato salad, and the grandkids loved her grilled cheese sandwiches.

Cobb was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and May Palmatary, and a twin who died at birth. She is survived by her one love, Willian Cobb, who took care of her during her illness; a brother, Harold Palmatary and his wife, Nancy of Dagsboro, Del; three children, Susan Lyons and her husband, Andrew, of Millville, Del., William Cobb and his wife, Ann, of Stafford, Va., and Jodi Thompson and her husband, Phillip, of Fenwick Island, Del.; seven grandchildren, Andrew Lyons Jr., Sarah Hoban, Emily Harne, Marlo Cobb, Owen Cobb, Gunnar Thompson and Kylie Thompson; and nine great-grandchildren, Lily and Gracie Hoban, Ellen, Finley and Jackson Lyons, Brooke, Leeland and Julian Harne, and Elliot Peterson.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m., with viewing starting at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, Sept. 30, 2019, at Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road, Ocean View, Del.
