Local Kids Catch-all Fishing tourney reels in national acclaim

When people set out to run a fundraising event, they rarely expect to receive national recognition for their efforts. Well, locally, the Kids Catch-all Fishing Tournament has done just that, having recently been recognized as one of the best kids’ fishing tourneys in the entire country.

The United States’ largest platform for booking fishing trips, FishingBooker, has made a list of the best kids’ fishing tournaments in the entire country, and the Kids Catch-all Fishing Tournament has made that list as one of the best.

“It was fantastic to hear,” said Marilyn Williams of the Lyme Disease Association of Delmarva. “I didn’t know the fishing tournament was so well known [nationally]. It is a really great event. The Indian River Marina really does a great job. We have families continue to come back, so that is great as well. It is a fundraiser for us,” she said of the association, “so it allows us to raise money and to help us distribute our educational information on Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.”

For many parents, nothing is as rewarding as seeing their kid pull up their first fish. The joy they share at that moment, the pride they and their kid both feel, is what often sparks a lifelong love of angling.

“We had a kid — a teenager — who joined the fishing tournament this past year so he didn’t have to spend the day at his sister’s soccer tournament,” Williams continued. “His mom brought him both days, and dropped him off. Then the whole family came back for the awards on Sunday because he had won a trophy.”

The Lyme Disease Association of Delmarva was started 16 years ago.

“Our goal is to increase the size of the tournament, and to continue getting our information and resources out to everyone,” Williams concluded. “The kids are always so excited when they see their names on the leaderboard. We make a big to-do about it, so they are so happy.”

According to the Kids Catch-all website, the Indian River Marina is one of the premier fishing spots on the East Coast of the United States, due to the unique influx of the Rehoboth Bay and the Indian River Bay as they join and empty into the Atlantic Ocean.

The marina is part of the Delaware Seashore State Park, which offers two recently remodeled campgrounds with  modern conveniences, beach access to the Atlantic Ocean, two restaurants, a full-service 294-slip marina, boat ramp and more.

While it is still a ways off, the 7th Annual Kids Catch-all Tournament is tentatively scheduled for June 20-21, 2020.

The full list of the kids’ tournaments that made the FishingBooker list included another relatively local event, in the Assateague State Park Youth Fishing Derby, as well as the Mountain Music Kids Fishing Tournament in Douglas Lake, Tenn., Kids Fishing Slam in Madeira Beach, Fla., Young Anglers’ Tournament in San Diego, Calif., Lake Julian Park Kids Fishing Tournament in Arden, N.C., and Kid Fishing Tournament in Cedar Hill, Texas.
