John M. ‘Jack’ McHugh Sr., 82

John M. “Jack” McHugh Sr., 82, of Dagsboro, Del., passed away on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, Del. He was born in Wilmington, Del., on July 3, 1937, son of the late Francis McHugh and Margaret (Leonard) McHugh.
He was raised in New Castle, Del., and proudly served in the U.S. Army while serving in the National Guard, having been activated during the Berlin Conflict. He attended the University of Delaware to study accounting. McHugh worked for many years in retail management for Pathmark Stores.

McHugh was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Bethany Beach, Del. He was a six-year member and officer of American Legion Post 24 in Dagsboro, Del. He played Santa Claus for the American Legion and the Nanticoke Indian Tribe. McHugh was a collector of pioneer and Western items, and in his spare time loved gardening.

In addition to his parents, McHugh was preceded in death by his twin brother, James McHugh. He is survived by his wife, Emma Jean (August) McHugh of Dagsboro, Del.; two sons, John McHugh Jr. and Mark McHugh, both of Dagsboro, Del.; six siblings, Francis McHugh of New Castle, Del., Lois McClure of New Castle, Margaret Atkins of New Castle, Edward McHugh of Middletown, Del., Janice McHugh of New Castle and Deborah McHugh of New Castle; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., with visitation starting at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019, at St. Ann Catholic Church, 691 Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach, Del. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, Del. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Hospice Center; 100 Patriots Way; Milford, DE 19961.
