Robert H. ‘Bob’ Long, 97

Robert H. “Bob” Long, 97, of Millsboro, Del., passed away on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2019. He was born May 2, 1922, in Millsboro, to the late John H. and Alice E. Long.

Long served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the U.S. Trainer’s Association. He was an owner, trainer and driver of harness horses. He won his last race at Brandywine Raceway. He then became an over-the-road driver for the next 21 years, retiring from work for Perdue Transportation in 1984.

Long was a member of the Elks Lodge 2540 and an honorary member of the Indian River Yacht Club, having served as commodore in 1983. He was also a member of American Legion Post 28. He loved to fish and garden.

In addition to his parents, Long was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor F. Long; his second wife, Anna B. Long; and two sons, Donald R. and Roy A. Long. He is survived by a daughter, Ruth A. Patterson, as well as three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at noon, with viewing and visitation starting at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2019, at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington Street, Millsboro, Del. Interment will follow at the Redmen Memorial Cemetery in Dagsboro, Del. In lieu of flowers the family suggested memorial donations to Vitas Hospice; 30265 Commerce Dr., Ste. 202; Millsboro, DE 19966.
