Leon T. Baker Sr., 95

Leon T. Baker Sr., 95, of Millsboro, Del., passed away at his home on Jan. 5, 2020. He was born on March 12, 1924, in Gumboro, Del. to the late Norman C. Baker and Sara West Baker.

Baker was a high school graduate, and after school, he married his sweetheart, Doris. He led a fascinating life, having served in five major battle campaigns in World War II, including the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of Ardennes, known commonly as the “Battle of the Bulge.” He was wounded in combat.

After the war, he and his brother, Vernon, co-founded Baker’s Hardware, which is a successful business today in Millsboro.

He and his wife raised their children, family and grandchildren, whom he adored. Baker was a man of few words, but a caring family man. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, a well-known fixture in Millsboro and a respected member of the community.

In addition to his parents, Baker was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris, in 1981 after 37 years of marriage. He is survived by his children, Linda L. Pusey and her husband, Bill, of Millsboro, L. Thomas Baker Jr. and his wife, Meredith, of Florida and Alan Scott Baker and his wife, Donna, of Millsboro; his grandchildren, Tish Pusey, Ryan Pusey and his wife, Sarah, all of Millsboro, Shane Baker and his wife, Jessica, from Georgetown, and Dylan Baker of Millsboro; six great-grandchildren, Luke, Lee Ann, Kalyn, Lance, Christian and Charlotte; and his brother and business partner, Vernon Baker of Millsboro.

A funeral service and celebration of Baker’s life were to be held Jan. 12, 2020, at the Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro, Del., with the Rev. Karin Tunnell officiating. Interment was to follow at Millsboro Cemetery, with military honors by the U.S. Army. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace U.M. Church; P.O. Box 566; Millsboro, DE.
