‘Fire & Ice’ spreading out into new towns this weekend

Editorial

Prepare for fire and ice. Actually, let’s do that again. Prepare for “Fire & Ice!”

The popular Fire & Ice Festival, now in its third year, returns this weekend to provide a little winter entertainment, and it is branching out to Millville and Ocean View for the first time, with new locations at Lord’s Landscaping and Bear Trap Dunes, in addition to the traditional venue at the Bethany Beach boardwalk.

Much of the action will kick off on Friday, Jan. 24. Bethany Beach Ocean Suites will host NASA’s Wallops Island Moon to Mars program from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Millville Boardwalk will later show “Space Jam” at 4:30 p.m. and “Space Buddies” at 6:30 p.m. This year’s theme is “Out of This World,” hence the movie selections. Those movies, by the way, will cost $5 per person, and there will be $1 ice cream cones at Agape Creamery.

There will also be a block party and ice slide at Lord’s over the weekend, a walking tour of lighted ice sculptures in Bethany and much, much more, culminating in the traditional “smashing” of the ice artistry by “The Ice Lab” team on Sunday.

Fire & Ice has truly turned into a winter tradition in three short years, generating fun for spectators and additional business during the tough winter months. It has been organized and created by a combination of the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and town governments.

“We’re really grateful for how the businesses and the community have embraced it,” said Chamber Director Lauren Weaver.
