Golf show hits the green the weekend

The fourth annual Mid-Atlantic Golf Show swings into the Ocean City convention center this weekend when golfers from all over will be in area to play during the busiest golf package weekend of the year.

The show, presented by Pohanka Mercedes-Benz, features everything for the avid golfer from exhibitors, to a variety of attractions and activities, demonstrations and seminars.

Fenwick makes move to expand dock allowances

Many Fenwick Island property owners who were not previously permitted to have a dock at their canal-side or lagoon-side properties may soon have that option. The Fenwick Island Town Council, at its April 22 meeting, heard a first reading of a proposed ordinance change that would allow docks on canals 50 feet in width or wider.

Local post celebrates Vietnam vets

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) have proclaimed May 1-7 Vietnam Veterans Recognition Week, and the local Mason-Dixon Post 7234 (Quillen’s Point) will be holding a kickoff celebration on May 1.

Perhaps unbeknownst to many Americans, May 1 is celebrated as Loyalty Day in this country.

Voting reform group meets May 4

Citizens for a Better Sussex (CBS), a grassroots political activism group calling for greater county representation in eastern Sussex County, will meet Wednesday, May 4, 7 p.m., at the South Coastal Library (Bethany Beach).

CBS advocates for Sussex County Council seats voted on countywide, rather than only by residents of each geographical district.

One-way traffic proposed in Bethany

Judging by the lukewarm participation in Monday’s workshop on proposed bicycle and pedestrian safety measures in Bethany Beach, few of the town’s citizens realized that one-way roads would be among the proposals presented by the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT).

31st Annual Health and Awareness fair

The Roxana CHEER Senior Center is hosting its 31st Older Americans’ Health and Awareness Fair on May 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The fair will be held at the senior center in the Edward Pyle State Service Building located on Route 20 in Frankford.

Golf tournament to benefit wellness

The 1st Annual Jake’s Seafood House Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, June 20, at the Marsh Island Golf Club to benefit The Wellness Community-Delaware. Enjoy fabulous prizes, a buffet luncheon and drinks afterward at Jakes’ Seafood House on Route 1, Rehoboth Beach. Golfers may register to play for $60 per person, including green’s fees and cart.

County council defers on Moose Lodge

DelDOT talks third lane in Millville

South Bethany election

Once again, the town of South Bethany has attracted enough civic-minded citizens to have an election. It will be a best three-out-of-four race again this year, with Council Member Lloyd Hughes stepping down after more than 12 years.

IRSD slims workforce

The Indian River School District (IRSD) has eliminated several positions in the wake of a budget crunch associated with the completion of the district’s two high schools.

District representatives put a positive spin on it, saying they hoped attrition (normal turnover — better offers elsewhere, for instance), retirements and the lapse of limited-term contracts would close the gap.

May opening date for Ocean View restaurant

NorthEast Seafood Kitchen, the new restaurant by Matthew Haley and Bryony Zeigler (the creators of Redfin Seafood Grill in North Bethany Beach and Fish On! in Lewes), will open this May in Ocean View.

Haley and Harry Geller teamed up to develop Fish On! and now NorthEast Seafood Kitchen (NESK). The partners make up the parent company SoDel Concepts.

Waiting-area bars allowed to continue

At its April 15 meeting, the Bethany Beach Town Council voted 5-2 to extend a provision allowing the operation of “waiting-area bars” at restaurants in the town. The contentious discussion focused on a 16-seat bar area at Bethany Blues.

Bethany considers restricting non-resident votes

Some non-resident property owners in Bethany Beach could potentially lose their right to vote on town ballot issues, if certain revisions to the town’s voting regulations are made.
The issue was raised at the April 14 meeting of the Charter and Ordinance Review Committee (CORC), in response to concerns that the existing system might have some inequities.

The Bethany Beach Board of Adjustments during its April 18 meeting unanimously granted an exception to Anna Mae Buhl for the moving and raising of the garage-apartment on her property at 104 Central Boulevard.

County takes a look at Riverview project

Sussex County Council took another look at the Riverview project north of Millville on April 19, but deferred action: awaiting a recommendation from the planning and zoning (P&Z) commission.

The builders are seeking a residential-planned community (RPC) overlay on approximately 80 acres of land near the Tuckahoe Acres campground (Holt’s Landing).
