Michael G. Brockson, 52, a lifelong Delawarean who had a passion for studying philosophy, mathematics, science and history, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017, at his home in Frankford, Del.

George Vincent Carey Jr., 61

George Vincent Carey Jr., 61, of Selbyville, Del., died Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. He was born in Salisbury, Md., son of the late George V. Carey Sr. and the late Ada (Truitt) Carey.

Carey had been a sheet-metal worker and a pipefitter for many years.

James J. “Jim” Harley III, 71, of Millsboro, Del., formerly of Rockville Centre, N.Y., passed away on Aug. 20, 2017, at Delaware Hospice, after a very sudden cancer diagnosis. He was born to the late James Harley Jr. and Frances Harley on July 16, 1946, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Taylor Ward, 88, beloved husband, brother, uncle, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 16, 2017.

Ward was an Army veteran, and a painter and woodworker who loved to build things, especially for his family and friends. He was also an avid hat collector.

Mary E. (Zelesky) Hercker, 94

Mary E. (Zelesky) Hercker, 94, of Wilmington, Del., formerly of Millsboro, Del., and originally of Frackville, Pa., passed peacefully into heaven on Aug. 7, 2017.

She was the mother of four children, Tina Borek, Sandy Ferrara, Frank Hercker and Joseph Hercker, grandmother of 10, great-grandmother of 23 and great-great-grandmother of two.

Bert M. West, 75, of Kalamazoo, Mich., and formerly of Laurel, Del., passed away on Aug. 1, 2017, after a short battle with brain cancer. He was born in Laurel, Del., on Dec. 1, 1941, son of the late I. Lee West and Sara (McGee) West.

Jane E. Duvall, 74, of Dagsboro, Del., died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Del. She was born in Baltimore, Md., daughter of the late Allen Arnold and Margaret (Kreig) Arnold.

She retired from work as an administrative assistant with the Social Security Administration. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Bethany Beach, Del., and was an avid gardener.

Freda F. Hudson, 96

Freda F. Hudson, 96, of Lewes, Del., passed away Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017, surrounded by her loving family, in her home. She was born July 27, 1921, in Chester, Pa., a daughter of the late Harry B. Wilson and Bertha (Bowden) Wilson.

She was the co-owner of Big Oaks Campground in Rehoboth Beach, Del.

Gary Lee Meredith, 80

Gary Lee Meredith, 80, of Ocean View, Del., passed away in the comfort of his home on Thursday, July 27, 2017, with his family present. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday on Monday, July 24. Meredith had fought a brave fight with pulmonary fibrosis for the last several years. Delaware Hospice had been directing his care for the last five months.

He was born in Staten Island, N.Y., on April 28, 1957, son of Clarence “Clay” Pratt and the late Norma A (Barry) Pratt.

Barbara Ann Bittenbender, 89, of Selbyville, Del., died Thursday, July 27, 2017, at Compassionate Care Hospice in Wilmington, Del. She was born in Kansas City, Mo., daughter of the late William B. and Lillian (Divokey) Larson.

She retired from work as an accountant for the State of Maryland and was member of the Ocean City (Md.) Elks and the Moose Lodge in Roxana, Del.

Mary Frances (Zorn) Culver, 82, passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at her home in Selbyville, Del. She was born on Oct. 26, 1934, in Baltimore County, Md.

Culver married the love of her life, Leonard Eugene Culver, in 1952. They raised their four children, Sandy, Lenny, Vickie and Terry, in Rosedale, Md.

Shirley Marker Oliphant, 69, passed away suddenly on Friday, July 28, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Oscar and Cora Marker. She was married to Vaughn Oliphant for 45 years.

He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Long Schoenle, and many family members and friends.
