Brian E. Matthias, 59, businessman, musician and a loving, thoughtful and kind husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away on Dec. 7, 2017, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, Del., after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Matthias was born on Feb. 4, 1958, in Allentown, Pa. He graduated in 1976 from Sussex Central High School in Georgetown, Del., where he was a top musician in both band and choir. He went on to graduate from Kutztown (Pa.) University in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a music minor.

It was in Kutztown that he started Matthias Insurance, which he has owned for 37 years. The legacy of Matthias Insurance will continue under the leadership of his son, Zachary Matthias, who had teamed with his father in the business since 2005.

Matthias moved back to Georgetown in 2015 to take care of his mother and her husband. He acquired and lovingly remodeled a historical home in Georgetown, in which he showcased his restoration and artistic abilities. It was in Georgetown that Matthias married his husband, Mario Salgueiro, on Aug. 31, 2013. He enjoyed traveling, photography and a good craft beer.

Matthias is survived by his husband, Mario Salgueiro; his sons, Zachary Matthias, Nathan Matthias and Brandon Matthias; his mother, Bessie Esposito; his brother, Kenneth Matthias; his soulmate and the mother of his children, Deb Bortz; and a beloved granddaughter, Kayla Matthias.
