May 17
IRHS will rock you — Indian River High School will perform “We Will Rock You,” a 1970s/1980s musical extravaganza featuring the IRHS Stage Band at 6:30 p.m. on May 17 and 18. Admission costs $10 for adults (or $15 for a two-night pass) or $8 for students, seniors and military ($12 for two nights). Proceeds benefit the IRHS Music Department.
Safe Boating Week — Coast Guard Station Indian River Inlet will host a public open house on May 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with tours of the station and vessels stationed there. Slips ar available in the basin, and parking will be available for boat owners to bring in their vessels for a free safety examination from the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Reservations are not necessary. The base is located at 39373 Inlet Road, Rehoboth Beach.
May 18
Nanticoke heritage — The Nanticoke Indian Association will be holding Nanticoke Indian Heritage Day at the Nanticoke Indian Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be face-painting and Native American food and crafts throughout the day.
Youth fishing tourney — Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park will host a youth fishing tournament for those 15 or younger, at the fishing pier at the park. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with fishing beginning at 8 a.m. and judging and prizes to be awarded at noon. The rain date is May 19. Registration costs $10. Arts & Crafts Show — Good Earth Market will host its Semi-Annual Arts & Crafts Show in Clarksville, featuring local artisans, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Chicken Barbecue — The Delaware Diamonds Gray 16U Fastpitch Softball Team will hold its annual Chicken BBQ at the Georgetown Little League on Route 9. The cost is $7 for a platter than includes half a chicken, baked beans, roll, chips and pickle. Platters will be sold from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., or until they are sold out.
Quarter auction — The Greater Millsboro Kiwanis Club will hold a quarter auction at the Indian River fire hall. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the auction starts at 6 p.m.

Plant sale — The Barefoot Gardeners Plant Sale, sponsored by the Fenwick Island Barefoot Gardeners’ Club, will be held at the corner of Coastal Highway and James Street in Fenwick Island from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Day at the firehouse from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This will be a community-wide educational event open to the public and is free of charge. There will be area hospitals, other EMS units, bike-safety instruction, highway safety and more. MOAA meets — The Southern Delaware Chapter of MOAA will meet at Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant in Lewes from noon to 1:30 p.m. The speaker will be Laurie White of the Georgetown Veteran’s Administration office. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and a buffet luncheon will be served. Friends and guests are welcome.

AARP meets — Long Neck Chapter AARP #4903 will have its monthly luncheon and presentation in American Legion Post 28 at noon. Dine & donate — Bethany Blues will host a Dine and Donate event to benefit Sharon Conaway and her family, as they deal with exhaustive medical bills. The restaurant will donate 20 percent of the evening’s proceeds.

Justin’s Beach House 5K — The Justin’s Beach House Memorial Day Weekend 5K Run/3K Walk with Free Kiddie Dash will be presented by M&T Bank in downtown Bethany Beach. The Kiddie Dash starts at 7:15 a.m. on the boardwalk, with the run/walk starting at 7:30 a.m. at Garfield Parkway and Atlantic Avenue. An after-party will take place at Mangos. Participants should register soon at jbh5k.com, before the event sells out.
Used Book Sale — St. Martha’s Episcopal Church will hold the first of this season’s used book sales from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church at Maplewood Street and Pennsylania Avenue in Bethany Beach. Items include hardback and paperback books, children’s books, CDs, DVDs, puzzles and games. Yoga in the Garden — Good Earth Market and Mind, Body & Sole will host Sun Salutations & Gentle Flow Yoga with Susan at 7 a.m. Participants should bring a yoga mat and a beach towel. There is no fee, but donations will be accepted by the instructor.

Small Business Chamber — The Delaware Small Business Chamber will hold its first networking event in Sussex County on May 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Irish Eyes in Lewes.

Pancake breakfast — The Fenwick Island Lions Club is holding its annual “all you can eat” pancake breakfast at Harpoon Hanna’s in Fenwick Island. All the money raised goes back to the community for scholarships, eyeglasses, handicap ramps and sight programs.

- Bethany history — The Bethany Beach Museum, located in the lobby of town hall, will be closed on weekends until spring of 2006. At that time, new exhibits will have been added to those already on display. However, as town hall is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., all are invited to participate in a self-guided “Walk Through History” tour throughout the year.
