Grace Foulkrod, 88, departed this life on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Del. She was born on Sept. 1, 1929, in Wilmington, Del., to the late Charles Foulkrod and Jennie Gilbert Foulkrod.

Foulkrod was a resident at the Stockley Center in Georgetown, Del., from an early age. During her stay at Stockley, Foulkrod learned her social and independent skills, which were taught through music. She was also employed at the Gerht Building, where she painted ceramics. The Gerht Building is also where she met Shirley Mackey, who later became her job coach. She was very fond of Mackey. Later she worked at the greenhouse, planting and repotting flowers, which she enjoyed.

Mackey retired in 2001, but since they had such a special bond, she invited Foulkrod to live with her and her husband, Henry. The move changed Foulkrod’s life instantly, as she was always traveling to North Carolina, Florida and Baltimore with the family. She was always looking to ride and enjoyed shopping every day at the local Rose’s, Walmart and Dollar Tree stores. The ACTS thrift store in Ocean View, Del., was a popular destination for Foulkrod, Mackey and her children, Gene and Tina.

Foulkrod attended the Milford Senior Center, where she was a member of the Red Hats Club and loved shopping for different things to outshine the other members. The staff members at the center became very fond of her, and they loved her.

In 2014, Foulkrod lost her best friend, Shirley Mackey, whom she called “mom-mom.” Because of the bond that the family had, Foulkrod was able to remain in the Mackey home.

Foulkrod leaves to mourn her passing a niece, Debbie Foulkrod of Seaford, Del.; her extended family, Tina, Zahkharie and Tamara Midgette, all of Millsboro, Del.; the Bowden family, Troy, Glenda, T.J., Trey, Takoda, La’Asia and Shelton Bailey of Georgetown; Brian Andrews and his wife, Amy; Jeff Townsend of Dover, Del.; a special little fellow, Juelz Midgette of Millsboro; her pastor, the Rev. Annie J. Custis; and a host of friends.

A funeral service and celebration of Foulkrod’s life will be held Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017, at 1 p.m. at St. John’s 2nd Baptist Church, 26602 Mt. Joy Road, Millsboro, Del., with the Rev. Annie Jane Custis officiating. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. for visitation. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery. Condolences may be sent online at www.watsonfh.com.
