Haunted Library makes Selbyville 'spooktacular'

On Halloween night, even the scariest books can’t compare to a scary library. And trick-or-treaters in Selbyville will get a thrill as the Selbyville Public Library presents their annual Haunted Library on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The library will be closed on Wednesday while employees transform the building into a scary sanctum, haunted by witches, goblins and all kinds of ghoulish things. Once the tricky transformation is complete, the tour will begin with a ghostly history of the Selbyville Public Library building, which was built as a home in 1904. Only time will tell which horrible Halloween surprises lie ahead.

Last year, an estimated 550 people visited the Haunted Library, which has been a tradition for about eight years.

“We love doing it, and everybody seems to enjoy it,” said Lori Ingram, director of youth and library services for the library.

Tours of the Haunted Library run from 6 to 8 p.m., so children can visit in costume during official trick-or-treating hours in Selbyville. Chaperones can request a less-frightening experience for younger children, and all the kids get candy at the end.

The tour is entirely volunteer-run, and the library is still seeking a few more goblins to help. Contact Lori Ingram at the Selbyville Public Library at (302) 436-8195 to participate.

“It’s wonderful to have people to volunteer,” said Ingram. “It gives the kids a lot of fun.”
