After a tough loss, the Indian River High School softball team bounces back with a statement-making win.

That’s exactly what they did after falling to top-ranked Lake Forest 6-2 in their first game back from spring break on Thursday, April 20, turning things around to take down Red Lion 11-5 on Saturday, April 22, and Laurel 9-6 on Monday, April 24.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our team this season in how they bounce back from a loss,” said IR head coach Erika Murphy. “They’re doing a great job with that this season.”

“We were really excited to play Red Lion. We knew it was going to be a statement game,” added sophomore pitcher Nicole Patille. “Losses always motivate us. We weren’t worried. We knew we were going to bounce back and play as a team again, like we always do.”

The Indians jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first-inning of Saturday’s game against the Lions, the game eventually being called after four and a half innings due to rain.

Junior CF Julia Bomhardt went 3-3 with an RBI and four stolen bases in that matchup, with junior RF Damya Williams going 2-3 with four RBIs and junior 3B Braydee Whitman and junior DH/P Marley Evans each tallying doubles.

After starting the game from the circle, Patille would re-enter in the fifth inning to close things out as the rain began to pick up and Red Lion challenged with four runs in the top of the fifth.

“Everything that you do and know as a pitcher goes out the window when it’s raining,” said Murphy, who pitched for Sussex Central High School and Salisbury University during her own playing days. “Nicole did a very good job for us. As a pitcher and being so young, I think today it showed her that she can pitch in any condition under any circumstance, which I think is going to be huge for the team.”

“It happens,” said Patille of the less-than-ideal conditions. “I just had to slow down a little bit to be consistent and to throw strikes.”

After sealing the 11-5 victory and improving to 5-3 on the season, the Indians made it 6-3 and 3-1 in the Henlopen South division with a 9-6 win over Laurel on Monday.

Senior shortstop Makenzie Collins went 3-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases in that game, with senior 2B Madi McGee going 2-3 with an RBI and a triple. Bomhardt also tripled in the game, going 2-4 from the plate with a double and two RBIs.

While the wins were indicative of the statement the Indians were looking to make after the Lake loss, notably, Whitman did tally her second career homerun in that game, on a solo shot in the fifth inning that finally got the Indians on the board.

“It was low and inside — that’s my favorite pitch,” said Whitman, who hit a grand-slam last season, of the home-run shot. “I knew that I needed to do something for the team.”

The Indians were looking to keep their latest win streak rolling when they faced conference-rival Sussex Tech in a rescheduled game on Wednesday, April 27, (after Coastal Point press time).

They were scheduled to host Milford on Thursday, April 27, before traveling to Georgetown to take on Sussex Central on Tuesday, May 2. Both of those games were set to begin at 4:15 p.m.
