IR school board seeking candidates for two-month, three-year terms
The Indian River School Board is seeking interested candidates to fill a vacant seat in District 1 (Georgetown) through June 30 and/or for the next three years.
The district announced Wednesday, March 21, that board member Shelly R. Wilson had vacated her seat, effective immediately, because she had moved and now lives in District 3 – Millsboro. The board is now seeking a temporary member to complete her current term, which was set to expire in June.
Charles Bireley, board president, said notice of the vacancy will be posted for two weeks, and the school board aims to vote on the appointment of a new member at their April 17 meeting. Six of nine votes on the board are required to appoint a member to fill the uncompleted term, he said.
Additionally, two spots on the board were already uncontested in the upcoming District 1 election, as neither Wilson nor District 1 board member Robert D. Wilson have sought re-election. Only one candidate has filed to run for a seat representing District 1 – James E. Hudson. The board will vote again later to fill that vacant spot for a period of one year. In 2013, District 1 will have another election for the regular three-year term.
Anyone interested in filling the seat temporarily or for the full three-year term can contact Bireley at (302) 539-9043 or email@example.com.
Unless additional candidates come forward, coastal residents won’t be voting in this year’s IRSB election. In District 4, which covers towns south and east of Dagsboro (including the beaches and Selbyville), longtime incumbent Bireley is running unopposed.
The only contest is for a seat in District 2, located between Millsboro and Georgetown. Shaun C. Fink of Millsboro will challenge incumbent Patricia S. Oliphant of Georgetown for that seat.
The election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 8. School board members will be elected to a three-year term that begins July 1.
