IR school board seeks candidates for District 2
The Indian River School District is looking for interested candidates to represent District 2 on the Board of Education, filling a seat recently vacated by Patricia Oliphant. The district made the announcement Sept. 7.
According to Board President Charles Bireley, Oliphant had just begun her third term and seventh year on the school board. She played an active part in the district’s policy committee, which recently adopted a board member code of ethics and a social media policy.
“She had deep reservations about doing it,” said Birely of Oliphant’s resignation. “She’s just very busy. In order to do a job, you’ve got to devote a lot of time. “She has done a very, very good job with us. She’s been very concerned with the issues and worked hard for the students. She’ll be missed.”
Candidates must reside in District 2, which covers the area from northern Millsboro to southern Georgetown. Interested candidates should contact Bireley at (302) 539-9043 or 57lakers@mchsi.com.
The seat will be up for an election next spring, and the term of the temporary appointment will officially end June 30, 2013.
