Mildred Virginia Harmon, 95
Mildred Virginia Harmon, 95, of Frankford, Del., passed away Friday, April 27, 2012, at her daughter’s home in Millsboro, Del.
Born Aug. 20, 1916, in Frankford, Harmon received her early education at Frankford Elementary School. She married the late Leroy Harmon Sr. in 1935. She was a poultry worker and caregiver until she retired in 1978. She was passionate about caring for her family and gardening and was fondly remembered for tilling her garden in her huge straw hat.
Prior to her illness, Harmon was an active member of Antioch A.M.E. Church, serving on the trustee board and singing in the Sons & Daughters Choir, often bringing tears to the eyes of members when leading the hymn “Around God’s Throne.” She was known as a very stylish and humorous woman with an angelic voice, warm heart, beautiful spirit and immeasurable strength and courage. Family members said they just don’t make women like her anymore and that her strength is an heirloom that all of her descendants will carry on forever.
Harmon was preceded in death by her parents, Virginia and George Lockwood; her husband, Leroy Harmon Sr.; and five siblings, Reanna, identical twin Minnie, Norman, Boe and George. She is survived by her three children, Carolyn Jones and her husband, William, of Millsboro, Leroy Harmon Jr. and his wife, Ellen, of Selbyville, Del., and George Harmon and his wife, Mary, of Frankford; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral service was scheduled for Friday, May 4, 2012, at noon, with a viewing at 10 a.m., at Antioch A.M.E. Church; 194 Clayton Ave.; Frankford, DE 19945. All condolences should be sent to Antioch A.M.E. Church.
